What is a traditional leaded light?
Leaded lights are windows or glass fittings made from pieces of cut glass (clear, stained, textured, untextured, a combination of some or all of these) soldered together securely with lead in an attractive pattern. These pieces of glass are referred to as "quarries" and are of regular geometric shape sometimes square, rectangular or circular but most frequently diamond shaped
Where stained glass windows are found principally in churches and ornate buildings, leaded lights are a common feature in private homes and the style of these windows is often a clue to the age of a building; between 1860 to 1930, leaded lights were a regular architectural feature in residential houses and cottages, and they remain popular today
"At Tenby & Penny, we only ever use 100% authentic stained glass for our traditional leaded lights (as opposed to surface paints or films which can fade, crack and peel over time)"

Leaded lights differ from stained glass windows in that they are generally less complex in their design and so simpler to manufacture; encapsulating the beauty of authentic stained glass, they are a more economical option for those wanting to inject some colour and character into their home
Unlike stained glass windows, leaded light windows are usually non-pictorial, and favour geometric shapes and formalised plant motifs over elaborate designs Colours employed in leaded light windows may range from delicate pastels to intense hues. However, since these windows are primarily installed to illuminate the property interior, with or without a decorative function, the glass employed is usually of pale hue, or transparent. Glass may be textured, patterned or beveled to create a beautiful, prismatic effect on any light passing through the window |

It's important to state that whilst other companies advertising a similar service tend to rely on surface paints or film to colour their glass (a technique susceptible to cracking, fading and shrinking over time), at Tenby & Penny, we only ever use genuine stained glass for our coloured glass products. This means that not only do our traditional leaded lights and future units possess a superior depth of colour, but a life time guarantee on colour fading
